The DO's and DON'ts of Spring E-biking

The DO's and DON'ts of Spring E-biking

The weather has warmed up in many parts of the country, which means it's time to start riding. Take your e-bike for a ride during the spring season and enjoy the season to the fullest.

As exciting as it is to pull your e-bike out of storage for the first time and hit the roads with fat tires right away, there are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind when riding early in the season. Today we will look at the DO's and DON'T's of spring e-biking.

DO Keep Your E-bike Dry

The spring season is full of fun, sun, and rain! You may be tempted to leave your e-bike out overnight, especially if you plan to use it the following day. Due to spring's heavy rainfall, this might not be the best idea. It is not advisable to leave an e-bike out in the rain, just as it is not advisable for traditional bikes. Besides rusting your frame and metal bike parts, rain can also damage your battery and motor.

When not in use, store your e-bike in a cool, dry location. Use a foldable chain lock if you need to lock it up under a garage or apartment awning to prevent theft. Whatever you do, don't leave your bike outside in the elements. In the event of rain forecast for several days in a row, consider bringing your bike inside to a garage, basement, or even your apartment.

DO Keep Your E-bike Clean

If your bike has been in storage throughout the winter, then the first thing that you should do is give it a thorough clean. If possible, use a stand and remove the wheels to ensure you can get into every area of the bike. Besides, remove the battery ahead of cleaning to ensure safe practice and allows you to clean from the frame underneath.

Start washing the ebike with water and scrub it with a cloth or a brush to remove the dirt from tricky places like the pedals, between the tires and brakes. You can also use a damp cloth to clean the electrical components, bearings, motors, seals and hubs. Do not use jet wash as the water will infiltrate the electrical components and cause damage.

DO Watch for Icy Road Conditions

During the spring, thawing and refreezing of water on streets and sidewalks can be a problem. As the temperature rises during the day, snow melts, and then the air cools at night, causing it to freeze again. Concrete and dirt can form an ice layer when this occurs. Pay attention to the weather forecast and the temperature. Maintaining vigilance during your morning bike ride will help you reduce the risk of slipping and falling.

DO Perform Annual Maintenance

E-bikes are often stored over the winter, so dust and debris can accumulate on them. Over time, metal components such as gears and chains begin to dry out and tires lose air pressure. Therefore, we recommend thorough annual maintenance before riding your bike for the first time in spring.

We also have an entire guide dedicated to bicycle chain lube, which is particularly important before your first ride of the season.

DON’T Ride Your E-Bike Through Deep Water

Most ebikes these days are made with water-resistant sealed components that prevent the general spray and rain from getting into the battery, motor, and controller. These electric bike parts aren’t waterproof but are designed to take a typical ride in the rain. However, not all ebikes are made the same with each ebike and component having different quality levels and tolerance for exposure to moisture. So it's not advised and pls do not ride your e-bike through deep water because it can damage the electrical components of the battery and motor.

DON’T Run Out of Battery Charge

Checking the battery on your eBike is crucial before heading out for your first big ride of the year. If your bike has been left over the winter, then the first thing you will want to do is to fully charge it. Ideally, if you are leaving your electric bike over the winter, then you should keep your battery charged to ensure it remains in the best condition. Do not run out of battery charge especially under this special season.

DON’T Forget to Dress in Layers while E-biking

Finally, don't forget to dress in layers while biking in the spring. While it may be cool when the sun rises, it can heat up on your ride, especially if you are taking a long trip. Wearing one heavy jacket may lead to heat exhaustion. Dress in multiple layers that can be removed one at a time as the weather warms up. Use a waterproof outer jacket as the top layer. You can also consider a pair of waterproof cycling gloves with non-slip technology.

Here are your spring e-biking do's and don'ts. Be sure to keep your e-bike clean, dry, and well maintained, especially the first time you remove it from storage. Avoid riding through deep water and watch out for hidden ice. Make sure your battery is charged and that you are dressed appropriately for the temperature range. Using these e-bike tips, you'll be ready for the new riding season like a pro! Enjoy riding!
